Replacing Wars?

While I enjoyed the Olympics, I'm glad they're over. The first week is great; by the second week I get a little fatigued trying to keep up with all the different events. But the Olympics kind of got me thinking.

I heard that groan.

Anyway, it's Thursday, so here's my strange story idea for the week:

What if we didn't fight wars? What if we solved international disputes with a sporting contest?

It wouldn't have to be something as grand as an Olympic games. Perhaps just a basketball tournament or a decathlon.

What would that be like? What sort of world would do that? Would it help or hinder international relations?

  1. At first I thought your post title referred to a new reality series, and now I'm wondering what that show would be about.

I like your idea; but I think that was the original idea of the Olympics themselves was to avoid war.

I was going to look it up for you but in reading about the Olympics I got distracted by a reference to "quoits," and had to see what that was all about. Here is what that is all about:

Quoits (koits, kwoits) is a traditional game which involves the throwing of metal, rope or rubber rings over a set distance, usually to land over or near a spike (sometimes called a hob, mott or pin). The sport of quoits encompasses several distinct variations.

  2. As an atheist, I would be all for this because I respect life. I realize that my fellow human has only one life (no afterlife) so I would want it to be as peaceful and filled with joy as possible.

However, the religious people of the world (especially fundamental Christians) will sometimes look at the Book of Revelation and think, "I need to do something to bring about the Rapture! Let's use all the resources! Overpopulate the world! I got my finger on the Armageddon button and if it blows up, I'm in heaven!"

It's difficult for me to find reason with these kinds of people because they literally are ready to be raptured as true believers. So there will always be war. But I doubt it will be started by the atheists.

  3. An interesting idea--reminds me of The Hunger Games to an extent, just on a different scale and for a different purpose. Probably would be a good thing in decreasing the number of people caught in the crossfire.

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
