Other World Portals

A favorite story premise of mine has the main character ending up in a different world, either by going through a portal or somehow ending up on a different world. But one thing we only see glimpses of in those stories is my question for today.

What if someone you are close to up and disappeared to one of these other realms? What would you think? What would you think if they suddenly reappeared telling stories of other worlds?

  1. I would assume they has simply left, not gone to another realm. And I'm sure I would think they were crazy if they came back with stories of other worlds.

    1. But what if they were the responsible sort? Not the sort to just up and go?

  2. Unless they had some sort of proof, otherwise yeah, I'd assume they were crazy. But with proof, I'd have to make some serious reevaluations of my worldview.

  3. It would depend on who it was but most of the people I'm close to would never make up anything like that so I'd have to believe them, or at least consider believing.

  4. What just happened?

I had a comment and then it disappeared. I hit something on the keyboard. If you get half-a-comment, let me know.

What I WAS saying was "I'd like to want to believe them," but if Sweetie disappeared, or not, and then just said "Hey, I went to Narnia" or something, I'm pretty sure I'd at best just humor her, absent proof. Just because things don't actually work that way, you know? I mean, if she said "Hey, it turns out I'm actually a member of the Royal Family" or something I'd probably take her word for it, because based on what I know, that COULD happen.

    GOOD question, though.

(As an aside, I worry about how I would know if I was going crazy. I'm a total hypochondriac. So your question actually made me wonder: what if I suddenly thought I was living in a different world and then came back? Would I tell anyone? I decided I wouldn't, on the [entirely too likely] chance that I simply imagined it.)

    1. Nope, no half comments...

That is a good question. How would you know whether you had gone crazy or if you were really in another world? Hmmm. That sounds like a good Thursday question...

I appreciate your comments.

I respond to comments* via email, unless your profile email is not enabled. Then, I'll reply in the comment thread. Eventually. Probably.

*Exception: I do not respond to "what if?" comments, but I do read them all. Those questions are open to your interpretation, and I don't wish to limit your imagination by what I thought the question was supposed to be.
